Recovery
After a colostomy or ileostomy operation a patient will need to stay in hospital for a few days to recover.

Several different devices will be attached to them such as:
-
An i/v drip that provide fluids.
-
A catheter inserted into the bladder.
-
A cannula or oxygen mask to aid breathing.

At first a larger clear colostomy bag is inserted so it makes monitoring easier.

Strenuous activities that put any strain on the abdomen should be avoided.

Excessive flatulence and unpredictable discharge from a stoma is common in the first few weeks after the operation.
