Ileostomy

WHAT IS IT?

An ileostomy differs to a colostomy as it usually involves removing the entire colon (large intestine) and in some cases the rectum also. Like the colostomy operation, there are many ways an ileostomy can be performed, depending on patient needs. Open surgery can be performed, but keyhole surgery is preferred for the same reasons as above.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES

An end ileostomy is achieved by removing the entire colon through an incision in the abdomen. The end of the ileum (small intestine) is cut so the waste can pass, and then stitched onto the abdomen, usually on the right-hand side.

A loop ileostomy is formed in the same way as a loop colostomy, but the section of bowel pulled through the abdominal wall to form the stoma is the ileum.

An ileo-anal pouch is an alternate operation that allows the patient to be able to pass waste normally. This is achieved by joining the ileum to the anus.
