Psychological and Social Issues

After having stoma surgery then a patients self-esteem and perception of themselves may be affected.

It is normal for a patient to feel a sense of loss and fear about the operation as their life will be different from now on. It is important that the patient knows they will be able to have a fulfilling life.

Patients may be concerned that their relationships will be affected with family, friends and partners. They should be encouraged to be prepared to briefly explain to their family and friends about the surgery.

Intimacy may also be affected by having a new stoma, as patients may feel nervous or embarrassed about their partner seeing it.

There are many ostomy support groups available to help and council patients so they feel comfortable with any issues they have. Patients often find it easier to talk to others who are in a similar situation so these are a great idea and should be signposted to.
